What are neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators work by blocking signals from the nerve to targeted muscles preventing the muscle from contracting or tightening. This causes the muscle to relax, softening the appearance of lines and creases allowing the patient to achieve the desired goal. There are many neuromodulator injections on the market, all containing the same active ingredient of botulinum toxin. Examples of neuromodulators on the market include Dysport and Botox.

It is important to note that neuromodulators are not the same as dermal fillers. Dermal fillers, as the name suggests, fill wrinkles, lines, and creases while neuromodulators only affect lines or creases caused by muscle contraction. Some wrinkles and signs of aging are caused by sun damage or gravity and may not respond to injections.

What conditions can neuromodulators improve?
Neuromodulators are effective at improving the cosmetic appearance of the following conditions or concerns:

  • Creases and lines in the neck and chest
  • Crow’s feet
  • Dimpled chins
  • Forehead wrinkles and furrows
  • Frown lines or wrinkles around the mouth
  • Muscular bands around the neck

Neuromodulators may also be used to treat excessive sweating, decrease oil production, and improve facial contouring.

Treatment
During your initial consultation, we will review your medical history and discuss your desired results and expectations to determine which is the most effective treatment option for you.

The procedure itself is short and can be done within 10-15 minutes without anesthesia. During the procedure, the patient is injected with very small amounts of purified botulinum toxin into targeted muscles. This quick treatment allows patients to return to most daily activities immediately. We recommend you wait a minimum of 2 hours before engaging in any strenuous physical activity such as working out, heavy lifting, or any activities that might raise your heart rate.

Following treatment, you may experience mild soreness and bruising. It is important not to touch the treated area for at least 24 hours. Other side effects include swelling, redness, soreness, and weakness in surrounding muscles. A small percentage of patients may develop muscle drooping, but this often happens due to the treated area being touched or put under stress within 12 hours of treatment.

Results
It may take several days once swelling or bruising subsides to notice results. Though treatment is not permanent, the full results should be expected within a few weeks with results lasting 3-6 months. Muscle action will gradually return and need to be treated again. The appearance of lines and creases generally return less severe with subsequent treatments often producing more lasting results than the patient might have experienced previously.

We want our patients to look natural, which is why we only inject small amounts of the toxin. This enables us to control the effect just enough to weaken and relax the targeted muscles without affecting other areas, allowing you to maintain your natural facial expressions.
